I was listening to an album today and it reminded me of the music I would often hear on Mega Drive games when I was younger.
Listening back to it, I forgot how great some of it actually is.
Above is a medley of tunes from the ‘import’ games aka the cool Japanese one’s that I never got to play.
The music still works and is interesting even when the gaming part is taken out of the equation, which goes to show the thought and care that went in to composing these tracks.
Some kind soul has uploaded loads of Mega Drive music to YouTube.
I was recently asked by the Nottinghamshire Tourist board to write about some of my favourite places in the city.
Details of a gig I’m organising for Record Store Day in Nottingham…
On Saturday 21 April to help Celebrate Record Store Day, LeftLion brings you three of our favourite Nottingham bands, and it won’t cost you a penny (yes, it’s completely free)…

Fists
By the time they play for us dahn at Tempreh, Fists will have completed a tour of the East Coast of America taking in 5 cities in 5 days, including dates in DC, Boston and New York. After all that globetrotting we are pleased to bring them back for a celebratory homecoming gig. By now you should know the rest - 6Music faves, various festival appearances including Glastonbury and Summer Sundae, a couple of 7”s, an EP, with an album just around the corner. To put it simply: One of the best bands to come out of Nottingham, ever.

Cantaloupe
The latest signings to one of our favourite record labels, Hello Thor, Cantaloupe feature ex members of the recently defunct Souvaris. Like their previous outfit they are strictly instrumental, but this time they are mixing together elements of krautrock, afrobeat and squelch synth sounds to make insanely catchy and infectious pop music.

Kagoule
In their short time together, Kagoule have already graced the Main Stage at Rock City when they supported Kappa Gamma and Dog Is Dead back in December. Whilst LeftLion recently described their Son EP as, “A mixture of blistering raw power with moments of subtle beauty”. They’re one of the most exciting new bands in the city and we are more than honoured to have them playing for us.

Selectadisc DJ’s
Making our Record Store Day gig even more ‘Record Store’, DJ’s from the legendary Nottingham record shop will be spinning a fine selection of tunes before, in-between and after the bands have played.
In addition to all of this, The Music Exchange will be continuing their Record Store Day celebrations and selling a whole bunch of records on the night including any left-over RSD stock.
Fists, Cantaloupe, Kagoule play for LeftLion as part of Record Store Day at Cafe Bar Contemporary on Saturday 21st April 2012. Free entry.
Facebook event
Just started using this today. Seems like a really neat idea. It’s like a cross between Tumblr and Twitter, but for just sharing music. You post-up and share one track a week. And it even Scrobbles to Last.fm.
This is me.
