Mega Drive Music

I was listening to an album today and it reminded me of the music I would often hear on Mega Drive games when I was younger.

Listening back to it, I forgot how great some of it actually is.

Above is a medley of tunes from the ‘import’ games aka the cool Japanese one’s that I never got to play.

The music still works and is interesting even when the gaming part is taken out of the equation, which goes to show the thought and care that went in to composing these tracks.

Some kind soul has uploaded loads of Mega Drive music to YouTube.

KGMZ

I went to the Kogumaza LP launch last Thursday at The Chameleon and much like previous Kogumaza gigs, I was completely blown away.

It was probably my 5th/6th time of seeing them, but they never disappoint. They sound like a different band every time I’ve seen them too. I guess this is due to the nature of their music and the fact that they are still a relatively new band and are still discovering what they can do with their sound.

And how to describe their sound? It’s hard as without trying to sound like some acid freak, and without being too much of a hippy about it, they are the type of band that you have to watch live and ‘experience’. But, think huge slabs of heavy, loud, droning, hypnotic guitar riffs. You can listen for yourself up above anyway.

Anyway, I picked up their album in the post-show euphoria and listened to it for the first time today, and it felt like it was going to shake my house down to the ground. It’s huge and heavy with a really dubby bass to it.

I’ve linked to the album above, but I suggest that you point your browsers towards their record label Low Point and purchase a copy immediately.

Crushing Blows - Crushing Blows EP

This is the eponymous debut EP by Derby band Crushing Blows.

I’ve been listening to it a lot this past month after I was sent a link to it. It’s like a crazy mix between a noisy post-hardcore band and a pyschedelic indie-pop band like the Animal Collective.

It’s also free to download from the Crushing Blows Bandcamp page. Result. I suggest you do so pronto.

Notts What I Call Music (A Spotify Playlist)

I’ve started compiling a Spotify playlist of all Nottingham acts. The title of the playlist is ‘Notts What I Call Music’ and the hope is for it to contain one track by every Nottingham act currently available on Spotify.

You can listen to and subscribe to the playlist by clicking this link:

I’m sure that there are some glaring omissions, so if there are, let me know.

Props to LeftLion and the old May Contain Notts blog for the playlist name.
